World Trade Center 7
Claimed for: The third building to collapse, 2001
A 47-storey tower that no plane hit came down late that afternoon, in a way that looked to many people like a demolition.
01The claim
As told: WTC 7 fell almost symmetrically, at or near free-fall speed for part of its descent, hours after the towers, with no aircraft impact — a signature, the claim says, of a planned demolition rather than of fire.
02Origin
Suspicion grew from the footage itself and was sharpened by the long delay before any official account was published, and by a live BBC broadcast that reported the collapse before it happened — an error traced to a wire report, but a gift to the argument.
03Accounts

04What's known
Investigators attributed the collapse to uncontrolled office fires fed by burning debris and fought with no working water supply, which caused thermal expansion of floor beams, pushed a critical interior column off its seat, and triggered a progressive interior failure that left the facade to fall as a shell. The report explicitly accepted a period of free-fall descent, which the earlier draft had not, and that concession is why the free-fall point is often quoted. The mechanism is unusual, and independent structural engineers have argued about its details ever since; the case for demolition still requires explosives nobody has produced.
Documented risk
No physical risk. The entry is here because the building is genuinely unusual and was, for years, barely explained in public.
