Vaccine shedding

As told: recently vaccinated people transmit vaccine components — spike protein, viral material, or an undefined agent — to unvaccinated contacts, causing menstrual disruption, illness or infertility. The claim spread widely in 2021 and produced advice to avoid vaccinated family members.

The term was borrowed from a real phenomenon in live-attenuated vaccines and generalised to vaccines that work nothing like them. Its 2021 form spread through anecdote networks on social platforms, where clusters of unrelated symptoms were attributed to proximity rather than to any measured exposure.

Shedding is real and documented for live-attenuated vaccines: oral polio vaccine virus is excreted and can transmit — this is the origin of vaccine-derived poliovirus outbreaks, and why most countries switched to the inactivated injected form. Live varicella vaccine has caused rare transmission where a vaccinee develops a rash, and live nasal influenza vaccine sheds attenuated virus. Immunocompromised household contacts are given real guidance about these, and it is not controversial. None of that applies to inactivated, subunit, or mRNA vaccines: there is no replicating organism to shed, mRNA degrades within days at the injection site and draining lymph nodes, and no mechanism exists for transferring a protein between people through proximity. Studies looking specifically for menstrual and pregnancy effects in unvaccinated contacts have found none. The honest version of this entry is that the underlying concept is legitimate and the specific 2021 application of it is not.
