Pull it and the insurance payout

Claimed for: Motive claims around the World Trade Center, 2001

The claim that the leaseholder said the order to demolish WTC 7 out loud on television, and profited from the destruction.

01The claim

As told: leaseholder Larry Silverstein said "we decided to pull it" of WTC 7 in a 2002 documentary, having taken the lease weeks before the attacks and insured it heavily — a confession, in this reading, plus a motive.

02Origin

The quote is genuine and clipped from PBS's America Rebuilds; the motive framing was built out around it in Loose Change and its many derivatives.

03Accounts

Not collected for this entry

Accounts are deliberately not collected here. This entry documents a historical case rather than a circulating remedy.

04What's known

In the full exchange he is describing pulling firefighters out of a building judged unsafe, which matches the fire department's own account that the building was abandoned and a collapse zone established hours before it fell. He was not in the building and had no authority over it that day. The insurance litigation ran for years and turned on whether the attacks were one occurrence or two; the settlement did not cover the cost of rebuilding, which is a poor outcome for an arsonist.

Documented risk

No physical risk. The claim is defamatory about identifiable living people, which is worth remembering when repeating it.
