The claim as it is told: the Warren Commission's lone-gunman conclusion was reached too quickly, with agencies withholding relevant material from the commission itself, and the remaining sealed files are what would settle it.

Public doubt was immediate and majority-held within a decade. The 1976-79 House Select Committee on Assassinations reopened the case; the 1992 JFK Records Act, prompted by Oliver Stone's film, mandated disclosure of the files with limited exceptions.

Established: the Warren Commission was not told about CIA-Mafia plots against Castro or the full extent of surveillance on Oswald, a withholding the CIA's own internal historian later called a benign cover-up. The HSCA concluded in 1979 that there was probably a conspiracy, based on acoustic analysis of a police recording — analysis a 1982 National Academy of Sciences panel then disputed, leaving the point contested rather than resolved either way. Releases have continued in stages through 2017-2025 with some redactions still in place. No released document names a second shooter or an organising party. The honest position is that the medical and ballistic evidence is heavily argued in both directions, the institutional deceit around the investigation is proven, and those are two different findings.
