Controlled demolition and thermite

Claimed for: The manner of the collapses, 2001

The claim that explosives or incendiaries were placed in the buildings beforehand, evidenced by dust residues and puffs of debris from the facades.

01The claim

As told: horizontal ejections of material — squibs — appear below the collapse front; witnesses reported explosions; and papers have reported iron-rich microspheres and unreacted aluminium-iron particles in the dust, described as residue of nano-thermite.

02Origin

The argument was assembled in the mid-2000s in self-published and pay-to-publish venues and promoted by a small group of academics and engineers, most visibly through the organisation Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth.

03Accounts

Not collected for this entry

Accounts are deliberately not collected here. This entry documents a historical case rather than a circulating remedy.

04What's known

The residue findings have not replicated in independent analyses, and the particles described are consistent with the material inventory of a burning, pulverised high-rise: paint primer, welded steel, mineral wool, fly ash. The squibs coincide with the collapse front reaching each floor and are consistent with air and debris being forced out. There is also a logistical problem nobody has answered: pre-placing charges through occupied floors of two of the most heavily used buildings in the world, and having them survive an aircraft impact and hours of fire, has no supporting physical evidence, no procurement trail and no participant.

Documented risk

No physical risk; the significance is what the claim asserts about who did it.
